Cuba

Just ninety miles from Key West, Florida, Cuba's laid-back splendour is everyone's paradise fantasy. It's the largest Caribbean island and includes the Isla de La Juventud (the Isle of Youth) and many smaller islands. The beaches of Varadero are the most popular, with more hotels and resorts than any other place in the Caribbean. The islands of Cayos Largo and Coco are also main tourist attractions. Sun worshipping, diving on the coral reefs and fishing for big game top the list of activities.

From the forests of the South American mainland came the first Cuban settlers. The year was approximately 5300 BCE and the Guanajatabey people settled the small island and began to cultivate tobacco. Strangely enough, tobacco is still one of Cuba's major exports and one of the linchpins of their economy.

In 1492, Christopher Columbus landed on the shores of Cuba, which signalled the end of Guanajatabey rule and the beginning of the Spanish rule. It wasn't until 1898, during the American-Spanish war, that Cubans were able to break away from the Spanish and begin to rule their own island. In 1902, Cuba declared her independence and it has remained independent ever since.

  Cuba Overview
Weather

Cuba's climate is one of the reasons why it's so popular with vacation goers. Cuba's climate is mild, subtropical. Because it's so close to the Tropic of Cancer, Cuba enjoys refreshing trade winds and marine breezes that are sure to delight any vacationer.

Cuba's average temperature fluctuates throughout the year, but it's generally in the twenty to thirty five Celsius ranges, which is perfect if you want to enjoy the beaches. If you're a water lover, you'll be very happy to know that Cuba's average water temperature is twenty five degrees Celsius.

However, travellers should beware when visiting Cuba between June and the end of November because of the hurricane season. Cuba doesn't have hurricanes every year, but the chance does exist if you're visiting during the hurricane season, that you'll have to endure some severe weather.
